Technological development of a new accelerated carbonation process for a steel by-product such as white slag.
The SLAGCO2 project aims to develop a new accelerated carbonation process for white slag, a steel by-product. This initiative focuses on the construction of a small-scale pilot plant (45 kg/h capacity) to investigate and optimize the key parameters needed to scale the technology to industrial levels.
Once fully deployed, this innovative technology is expected to process all the white slag produced by CELSA Group's steel plants in Spain (located in Barcelona, Bilbao, Santander and A Coruña). White slag is currently the second most generated by-product in steelmaking, much of which ends up in landfills. By valorizing white slag, the SLAGCO2 project will contribute to sustainable waste management and the circular economy.
In addition, this technology will capture CO2 emissions from billet reheating furnaces by fixing carbon dioxide from flue gases, thereby reducing direct emissions and improving the environmental sustainability of steel production.
