Valorization of iron oxide scale for its reintroduction in the steel production process.

The HYDRIX project focuses on the design and development of an innovative process to reduce iron oxide scale in high quality metallic iron, allowing its recovery and reuse as a raw material in steel production. By applying the principles of the circular economy, the project aims to increase the reusability and recyclability of resources, thereby reducing raw material consumption, minimizing material losses and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This dual economic and environmental approach is expected to drive significant improvements in the sustainability of steel production.
Iron oxide scale, generated mainly as a by-product in powder form during processes such as rolling, currently lacks effective recovery or reuse solutions. Through the application of reducing agents, HYDRIX aims to transform this waste into high quality scrap, known as "DRX", for reintegration into the steelmaking process.
